What are Maduros? - How To Make Fried Sweet Plantain

Maduros are a sweet fried plantain snack here in Puerto Rico. Consisting of a ripened (browned) plantain (banana) that you chunk up and fry - it's a VERY quick snack that can sweeten up a meal. Maduros platanos are a type of plantain that is popular in Latin American cuisine. They are typically fried or baked and can be served as a sweet side dish.

What are Maduros? - How To Make Fried Sweet Plantain

  • Honey : Optional - but a drizzle will do
  • Oil : 1/2 cup (Enough to submerge & fry your sliced plantains)
  • Ripe (Browned) Plantains : At least one, but the sky is the limit



  • A preferably deep and thin pan for frying oil
  • A pair of nice Tongs makes life around your fryer easy!



  • Peel your plantains, removing all of the green exterior and stringy material.
  • Cut your plantains DIAGONALLY. (This youtube video has a great example of a diagonal cut)
  • Once your oil is hot, place your chopped plantains and let them cook in the oil until they become a light golden-brown. Around 5 minutes making sure to flip the plantains every couple minutes.
  • Throw them into a bowl with some napkins to blot off the excess oil
  • Serve them up! Or drizzle some honey on the top of them to really take your maduros to the next level
