After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in September 2017, the entire island was without power. It took nearly a year to restore electricity to all of Puerto Rico.
Prepa provides electrical generation to the island and recently Luma has began taking over the distribution lines.
Now, Puerto Rico is working to rebuild its electric grid to make it stronger and more resilient. The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) is working on a plan to rebuild the grid with new, more modern equipment along side a private partnership with Luma.
One of the big challenges in Puerto Rico is that much of the island is very mountainous. This makes it difficult to build new power lines. Luma is working on a plan to build a new, more modern grid that will be better able to withstand hurricanes.
Luma is also working on making the grid more efficient. They are working on a plan to install more solar panels and wind turbines. This will help to reduce the amount of fossil fuels that Puerto Rico has to import.
